Is this confidential?

Yes. Your treatment here is protected health information, and records of substance use treatment carry extra federal protection on top of HIPAA. We do not tell your employer, your family or anyone else that you are a patient unless you ask us to in writing, or unless the law requires it in a safety emergency.

Appointments are by secure video, so nobody has to see you walk into a clinic.

What medication for addiction actually involves

Medication for addiction treatment is not swapping one drug for another. Used properly it steadies withdrawal and cravings so the rest of the work becomes possible. Which medication fits depends on the substance, your health history and what you want.

Depending on what is clinically appropriate, treatment here may include buprenorphine and Suboxone, Sublocade, Vivitrol, naltrexone, Antabuse or Campral. Nothing is prescribed before an evaluation, and no clinician can commit to a specific medication before meeting you.

Who leads this care

Straun Health & Wellness was founded by Dr. Teo-Carlo Straun, who is double board-certified in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Massachusetts and his addiction psychiatry fellowship at Yale, where he still serves as voluntary clinical faculty. Addiction is a subspecialty here, not a side offering.

If you have a mental health condition as well

Most people we treat for substance use are dealing with something else at the same time, usually depression, anxiety, trauma or ADHD. Treating one and ignoring the other rarely holds. Because this practice does both, you can be treated for both by the same team rather than being sent somewhere else for half of it.

Which insurance we accept

We participate with several major commercial and public plans, including Connecticut’s public program:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Carelon
  • Cigna and Evernorth
  • UnitedHealthcare and Optum
  • Magellan
  • HUSKY Health and the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership

Network participation varies by clinician and by service, so please confirm your own coverage before your first appointment. Self-pay is available if you would rather not use insurance.

Where we can treat you

We see patients by secure video in Connecticut, Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands, from our office at 243 Tresser Blvd, 17th Floor, Stamford, Connecticut. You need to be physically located somewhere your clinician is licensed at the time of the appointment, and our intake team checks that before booking you in.

You do not need to have stopped, and you do not need to have it worked out, before you get in touch.
